Week 10: November 1 - Interviewing Part I - Practice Interview(s)

Hello and Happy Belated Halloween!

If your Resume/Cover Letter got you an Interview opportunity--you'll want to 'close the deal' during that Interview (hopefully). After you've done some Practice Interviews ('short' interview, 'perfect' interview for example), how do you think you did? Were you stumped by certain kinds of questions?

Did these Practice Interviews give you a better idea of your strengths and weaknesses? Identify or explain what these results helped you learn either way.

How can you improve your interview techniques if you had a 'real' interview say, in 2 weeks? Would you be able to 'think on your feet'? [Don't forget to avoid the "fish handshake"...]

week 3- getting to know you...

Hey guys! I am a senior at UCf looking forward to graduation. My minor is in Hospitality Management and my areas are Criminal Justice and Education. I really enjoy all three areas for many different reasons. I started in Education and that was actually my major. My mother is a teacher and I had a wonderful childhood because she was always there when my brothers and I were off from school. One of my very long term goals is to one day become a teacher when I have children. I have also always been interested in the criminal justice department. My family is big into law enforcement. My Dad used to work in law enforcement and now has a private investigative firm, my brother is a detective in Port. St. Lucie and other family members are in that field of work also. With that being said our dinners were full of "cop talk" and I became interested. But for the time being I am most excited to use my area minor in hospitality as soon as I graduate. I am moving to Hawaii where tourism rules with high hopes of landing a good job in a fancy hotel or resort.
When I am asked about IDS or what I am graduating with, I really just give them the above in a nut shell. I tell them my three areas, which since mine are all over they always look confused so I have to give them the reasons I picked this major. People usually respond with "Well at least you focused on the many areas your interested in." or "You can do anything with that diversity." And its so true. That's is why for me IDS was a lifesaver. I did not have a very specific area that I wanted to study, so now I can do many things in those areas with a bachelors degree.

Welcome Cornerstone Mentees

I am a full time lifeguard and full time student. I chose UCF because I am able to live on the beach and commute to Orlando and go to a great university. I was origionally an education major. I switched to IDS a year ago and wish I would have known about it sooner. My minor is Hospitality Management and my two areas are Education and Criminal Justice. A pretty wide variety but I look forward to the oppurtunities and challenges. I plan to use my minor in Hospitality Management in January when I move to Hawaii. I am going just to surf and live a great life, but I will need a good job while I'm there. - Cheyenne Black

Hello fellow IDS Major Colleagues...My name is Lisa Beni, and I'm an ambling 'Baby Boomer'. Almost finished a 2-year Nursing Degree, but unforeseen health issues tabled my RN path. Started over, revamped priorities, and entered into UCF's IDS Program....It afforded me some time to fine-tune my goals during "Transition". I love helping people... This IDS Degree will allow me to transition into Relevant Interdisciplinarity Healthcare pathways dovetailing past experience into IDS and 'still' remain in my healthcare niche--Helping and working with people on a Psychosocial and Community-based context.... Volunteered: Orphanages, Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, a High School, YMCA, and several Hospitals--I'm curious about our "Junior Achievement" experience and objectives vis-a-vis my previous volunteerism/community-based contributions.......Also actively Job-Hunting in South Florida + Researching Graduate School options, and adapting to South Florida transition in my new home.
